USS HORNETUSS HORNET Average User Rating: (0 votes, add your vote or comments) The Eighth HORNET (CV-12) carries a distinguished name in US Naval History. Her namesake dates back to one of the two first ships in the continental Navy. The USS HORNET is credited with an impressive list of achievements that include nine battle stars earned for her WWII service, survival of 59 attacks without ever being hit, and support of nearly every Pacific amphibious landing after March 1944. Additionally, the Hornet recovered both Apollo 11 and Apollo 12 astronauts. Onboard exhibits include a TBM Avenger, an F14 Tomcat, and display of Apollo artifacts. The tour includes a short film introduction followed by visits to more than four of the ship’s decks. Hours: Daily, 10:00 am–5:00 pm; Tuesday 10:00 pm–3:00 pm *Last entry is one hour before closing. Directions: Take the Alameda/Oakland Blue and Gold Fleet ferry, departing from Fisherman’s Wharf, to Alameda Ferry terminal. Connect to AC Transit bus #63, which takes you less than a 15 minute walk from HORNET’s Pier. Take BART to Oakland’s 12th Street station (weekdays) and Fruitvale station (weekends) and then transfer to AC Transit bus #63. Taxis are also available from Alameda Ferry Terminal or Bart stations.
